A Note from the North Metro President

A Note from the North Metro President:

During this time of cold weather I have found myself daydreaming of warm afternoons, green grass and the sounds of cheers. Another season will soon be underway. Some of our competitive teams have begun their off season training and soon the new location for  Adrenaline Sports will be open and winter training will be in full force.  Despite the cold winter months the business of soccer continues.

Changes We Are Making

North Metro Soccer contracted with an accounting firm to undergo a pre-audit this past year. The accounting firm took a look at our financial records as well as our processes and procedures. There were no findings for fraud or mismanagement of funds.  There were several recommendations to ensure we are doing things properly and with greater accountability.  North Metro is a community asset and we are here to serve our members and understand that being fiscally responsible with the monies we are entrusted is an important part of what we do. The Board of Directors voted unanimously to accept the report and move forward in adopting all the recommendations. Many of the recommendations are already being implemented. View Recommendations made by Schechter Dokken Kanter CPAs.

I would like to say Thank you to the Board for their commitment and taking their responsibilities seriously in the pre-audit process.  A special Thank you to Kimberly Carr (Dir of Administration) and Lisa McDaniel (Board Treasurer) for all of their time and effort in working through the pre-audit and involvement in implementing the changes.  This list is posted on our website along with our progress implementing each of the recommendations.

As a part of this pre-audit process it became clear that some of the processes around team fundraising were not in accordance with IRS expectations.  Any fundraising on behalf of a team (or the club) cannot be for an individual but the team or club as a whole.  In other words any monies raised by a team benefit the team as a whole - each member equally, regardless of the amount any individual raised or did not raise.

As a soccer club we continue to work to improve the quality and numbers of referees.  There is a severe shortage of referees in the northern metropolitan area. We are working with the Minnesota State Referee Administrator to provide mentorship and support for the referees. We look to help them improve their craft and retain them from year to year. As always we are in dire need of referees so please pay attention to future communications about our plans and needs in this area.

New Registration System and website is up and running

We are in the process of rolling out a new registration system.   The new system is more robust and allows us to do our job more efficiently. Some of the benefits include improved scheduling for our Rec programs,  tournament programming,  and opportunities for more directed communication.  The website has a cleaner and updated look.  We worked hard to make it more intuitive to navigate and easier to locate the information you need.

MN United FC

2017 was an exciting year for soccer in Minnesota.  The Minnesota United have completed their inaugural season in the MLS.  Averaging over 20,000 fans per game the excitement and passion for the sport is growing.  North Metro has sponsored a club night these past several years and will do so again this coming year.  This allows families the opportunity to experience the fun and excitement first hand.  Stay tuned for more information.
